At BISAK our English curriculum is based on the Primary Framework for Literacy and is covered in three separated strands, namely speaking and listening, reading and writing. Literacy is not only taught in English lessons but is well integrated into other subjects. 

For speaking and listening, children are taught to tell stories and describe incidents from their own experience in an audible voice, retell stories, ordering events using story language and to tell real, imagined stories using the conventions of familiar story language. They are also encouraged to listen with sustained concentration, building new vocabulary within different contexts and to respond to presentations by describing characters, repeating some highlights and commenting constructively.


Children are taught to recognise and use alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes already taught, to recognise automatically an increasing number of familiar high frequency words, to be able to read more challenging texts that can be decoded using their acquired phonic knowledge and skills, along with automatic recognition of high-frequency words, to read independently and with increasing fluency longer and less familiar texts and to read high and medium frequency words independently and automatically.


Our writing lessons are focussed on independently choosing what to write about, plan and follow it through, create short simple texts on paper and on screen that combine words with images, draw on knowledge and experience of texts in deciding what and how to write and to select from different presentational features to suit particular writing purposes on paper and on screen.  Children are also taught to write chronological and non-chronological texts using simple structures and how to use planning to establish clear sections for writing.
