The English curriculum, which is based on the Primary Framework for Literacy, is separated into three strands: speaking and listening, reading and writing. These aspects are taught not only in English lessons, but cross over into all subjects of the Key Stage 2 curriculum.

Speaking and listening
Children are encouraged to:

  • use appropriate and specific vocabulary for different contexts
  • speak clearly
  • take turns to contribute
  • listen to the views of others
  • prepare and present performances to an audience to improve their self-confidence

Children are taught:

  • Reading skills through word recognition and spelling
  • To understand and interpret different fiction and non-fiction reading materials

Specific programmes that aid us develop children’s reading skills are our Guided Reading sessions and the implementation of the Accelerated Reading Programme. These aim to instil a love of reading as well.

Writing skills are developed through:

  • The use of modelling
  • Writing frames
  • The teaching of grammar and punctuation


Children are assessed on the specific guidance and criteria provided by Assessing Pupil’s Progress guidelines.
