This term, students from Years 7 to 10 participated in a unique competition that combined culinary skills with mathematics. With over 100 pupils taking part across four sessions, the event showcased an impressive variety of dishes, from savory classics like pasta with salad, homemade smash burgers, and chicken biryani to sweet treats such as cookies, cakes, and math-inspired pies and tarts. The competition offered a delightful blend of flavors and creativity, with pupils integrating mathematical concepts into their culinary presentations.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the competition was how students incorporated math into their designs. Scatter graphs took shape as artfully arranged food, pie charts were cleverly crafted from actual pies, and equations adorned the displays of sweet and savory creations alike. This cross-curricular project bridged the subjects of Food and Nutrition and Mathematics, highlighting the practical and artistic applications of both fields in an engaging and delicious way.
The competition culminates in a grand final after the Easter break, where the highest-scoring students will battle it out for top honors in both taste and presentation. The main tasters for the previous rounds were Mr. Marsh, Mr. McKee, Mrs Suha, Miss Vicky, Ms Reese and others, who evaluated the dishes based on taste, presentation, and how effectively math was incorporated. The competition’s grand finale, scheduled after the Easter break, will feature the highest-scoring students from the earlier sessions. In this final round, participants will strive to impress the judges once more with their creativity, precision, and culinary expertise.
The event was organised by Mrs Suha and Ms Reese, who praised the students’ enthusiasm and ingenuity. The competition has been a rounding success and finals will take place soon.
